Gibraltar, one day at a time.
Which Rock tour actually includes the tunnels. Whether the dolphin boat beats the cable car. How the Tangier crossing works when your hotel is in Estepona. Every Gibraltar tour, reviewed.
The six days Gibraltar gets booked for.
The macaques and caves of the Upper Rock, the galleries cut through the north face, the glass Skywalk, the dolphin boats in the bay, the coach run down from the Costa del Sol and the crossing to Tangier.
Gibraltar’s Rock tour: pick the version that fits.
All Upper Rock tours →
Almost every tour up there covers the same three stops: St Michael’s Cave, the macaques at the Apes’ Den and the Great Siege Tunnels. What changes is whether you ride the cable car, take a minibus round the loop, or walk the Mediterranean Steps and earn it.

Cable car up, caves and tunnels on the way down
One Upper Rock Nature Reserve ticket covers the cave, the tunnels and the Moorish Castle. The minibus tours run the whole loop in one go and put you back on Main Street with the afternoon free.

Gibraltar’s dolphins are twenty minutes off the quay.
The Bay of Gibraltar holds resident dolphins all year, and the boats leave Marina Bay and Ocean Village several times a day. Ninety minutes out and back, with the Rock standing over your shoulder the whole way.
Most Gibraltar day trips start on the Costa del Sol.
Pickups run from Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona, cross the border on foot and have you on the Rock by mid-morning. Some add Mijas on the way home. The Seville and Cádiz runs are much longer days for the same Rock.
From Gibraltar you can be in Africa by mid-morning.
Tangier sits on the far side of the Strait, and the day tours take the crossing off your hands: the medina, the Caves of Hercules, the camels at Cap Spartel, then back before the border queue builds. Bring your passport. This is a real frontier, twice in one day.

Three things you can only do in Gibraltar.

The Barbary Macaques
Around three hundred Barbary macaques live on the Upper Rock, the only wild monkey population in Europe. They are tailless, entirely unbothered by people, and through an unattended bag in seconds. Guides keep food out of sight for good reason: feeding them is an offence here, and the fine is not small.

The Great Siege Tunnels
During the Great Siege of 1779 to 1783 the garrison drove galleries through the north face to get guns onto ground no cannon could otherwise reach. Sledgehammers, crowbars and gunpowder, in solid limestone. The embrasures still look out over the isthmus, and the network kept growing until it ran to more than thirty miles.

The Skywalk
The Skywalk is built on a wartime anti-aircraft position on the eastern ridge, with a glass floor and nothing under it but the Mediterranean. On a clear morning you can see the Sierra Nevada one way and the Rif mountains the other. The Windsor suspension bridge crosses the gorge a short walk along the ridge.

Most of the Rock can be booked the night before from a hotel down the coast. These four run on border queues, ferry timetables, the sea state in the bay and a ship’s all-aboard time.
- 01Luxury Private Tour of Tangier from Gibraltar All InclusiveA full frontier crossing in each direction, so everyone needs a passport and the ferry timetable sets the shape of the day.
- 02Gibraltar Shore Excursion: The Original Rock, Shop & Caves TourTimed against the ship’s all-aboard, which is why the slots that fit a short call go first.
- 03Day trip to Gibraltar and Dolphin Boat TourThe boats run on the sea state in the bay, and through the summer they fill days in advance.
- 04Private Full-day Sailing Cruise from Gibraltar by YachtOne boat, one crew, one party a day. The calendar is the constraint here, not the price.
On a grey Gibraltar morning, go inside the Rock.
The levanter is the easterly that piles cloud on the summit and leaves the town under a grey lid for days at a stretch. None of it reaches the inside of the Rock: St Michael’s Cave, the Great Siege galleries and the wartime tunnels are the same in any weather, and the cable car runs unless the wind is up.
